‘While taking snaps of Japan from the International Space Station in June, an astronaut (Nasa doesn’t know which) spotted Sarychev Peak erupting in the Kuril Islands. “You can see an instant, short-lived ‘pileus’ cloud forming as the eruption pushes the air above the volcano rapidly upwards, causing it to cool,” says Will Stefanov, a senior geoscientist at Nasa’s Johnson Space Center in Houston.’
